Being a photographer typically entails being behind the lens, so there’s a sure and swift bout of anxiety that comes along with idea of having to perform in front of it for the first time fo’ reals.
Chris and I are flying to Southern California next week for a variety of festivities with family, bridal party, and our photographers (a big shout out to Inner Song Photography, what whaaa!). On Wednesday, we’ll be frolicking wine country in Temecula, CA with Justin & Jessica for our well-anticipated engagement session (eeee!!). Much like I express the importance of having one to my clients – and considering most of the time I ask Chris to pose for a picture I get the “O” face – this is thee way to break the ice and establish a comfort level in front of the lens. It’s an awesome way to get to know how our photographers work ahead of time so we clearly understand their direction in the midst of the craziness of the big day (which is way better than me trying to find awesome expressions in the mirror of my medicine cabinet), and, the best part, it’s dedicated time for Chris and I to spend together, just us, having a ball. Maybe one or two libations to get the show on the road …
From an insider’s perspective, here are a couple of ways I’ve helped prepare us for our engagement session:
1. Make sure you can look in the mirror and say, “Dang, I look goooood!”
If you feel like you look good in what you’re wearing, then you’ll feel good. If you feel good, you’ll be at ease. If you’re at ease, you’ll have a fabulous time. And if you have a fabulous time, you’re darn sure to loooove the pictures.
2. Be Pampered.
It’s not everyday I get to strut my stuff in front of a camera, so you can be sure I’m getting my hair all did, my nails done, and maybe a little bit of makeup (I’m usually an au natural gal) because, let’s be real, it just feels good when someone else is doing your makeup.
3. Coordinate & Accessorize.
I’m an eclectic gal, but find your style and work it. Personally, Chris and I are both coastal transplants who’ve lovingly embraced our New England lifestyle. We’re going with complimentary outfits – whites, khaki, browns, pastel blues – and jewelry with pops of color (well, for me anyway). There’s also a floppy hat in the house, oh yeah!
4. Make it personal.
Go nuts with this! Locations, mementos, you name it. Find a place close to your heart or bring along little pieces of your shared personalities. Me? I like fanci-fetti, so I’m bringing me some fanci-fetti. But mostly, I’m bringing love, because we love love.
5. Just Have Fun!
Ya dig? I completely trust my photographers (because they rule) to knock it out of the park, but we need to meet them halfway and just be. And like I said earlier, a libation or two to awaken the senses.
I sincerely wish what I’ve done to prepare is helpful on your quest for a future engagement session!!! Wish us luck. 🙂
xoxo,
Jessica
I love love too… and I love that you love fanci-feti! Have a fantastical time. (p.s. I love that dress)
